You have a Business Plan, but do you have a People Plan?

Business is a fast paced and always changing industry. When you are running your own business or one on behalf of a larger company, you always have a business plan. This plan goes through rigorous scrutiny before it’s approved. For this reason, the chances are high that if followed, you will succeed. Of course, one of the things that could definitely get in the way is the people you work with.

Becoming Successful in Business takes People Planning

If you want to be successful in business it’s important to know a thing or two about people. The truth is that whether you work with them or they work for you, people are a part of almost any line of work. You can’t expect to do anything in business without dealing with people. This is why you should have a people plan to go with that scrutinized business plan.

What is a People Plan?

Those that have experience running their own business usually have a good basic understand of people. This is because you’ve had to deal with them from the start. Your workers drive your business. If you want them to help you become successful in business, you need a plan to help motivate, encourage, and overcome the obstacles of your people. This is exactly what a people plan is. Just like your business plan lays out the fiscal, physical, and foundation of your business, your people plan describes your mandate for how you will deal with those you work with.

Building your People Plan

If you want to build a people plan that will ultimately work the best for you and your business, ask these three questions:

  1. What do you value in life?
  2. What are your core values?
  3. What is the most important to you?

Now combine the answers with your business plan and you have an idea of what principles and values you want your business to be about. Whether running your own business or making a career change this is the most important part of developing your people plan.

Some Get in the Way of your Business Plan

Not everyone is going to line up with your specific ideology for life or business. This can create conflict and make it harder for you do the things you want to do. It can also make it harder for you to make a career change or do anything that you desire in business. The solution to this problem is a simple one. Surround yourself with those that understand and support your core values and plan for business and you will find that success is a whole lot easier than you thought.
